- – Technician scanned codes and found DTC for a misfire on cylinder #4. Technician removed the #4 spark plug and found that the electrode had been smashed flat and was making contact with the tip of the spark plug. Using a bore scope, the technician inspected the top of the piston and found evidence that something soft had made its was into the combustion chamber and got smashed up by the piston which is also what made contact with the spark plug. No major damage to internal components was found. The technician replaced the damage spark plug and started the vehicle, found that there was still a misfire on cylinder #4. Technician then swapped the #4 plug with a known good cylinder, misfire was still on cylinder #4. Technician then swapped #4 coil with the #3 coil, misfire moved to cylinder #3, this confirmed that the ignition coil has failed as well. – Coil likely failed due to spark plug being smashed and grounding out.
